Blinkered glossy that caters to white gay men
The Advocate highlights, celebrates and glorifies the White Gay Male experience. Women are marginalized, people of color are marginalized, those who don't have less than 5% body fat or "beautiful" bodies are marginalized. This is not a "gay Newsweek" -- its scope is short, limited and blinkered. So, let's do a little rundown, all gay people are: male, white, beautiful, well-off, materialistic, urban, worship pop divas, sport designer threads, and this is supposed to be *our* version of Newsweek? Yeah... right.
I read every issue COVER TO COVER!
I've been a subscriber to The Advocate for several years, and no other gay periodical covers the GLBT community on a nationwide/international basis better!
While some cover stories occasionally come across as "fluffy" or sensationalistic (the Anne Heche story comes to mind), for the most part, the Advocate does an A++ job every month of offering its readers a wide mix of current events, politics, culture, humor and some excellent in-depth reporting.
The book, movie and music reviews don't just highlight the current flavor of the month among the critics, but also introduce new and upcoming artists, writers and musicians I may not have heard of yet.
For me the most fabulous part of every issue is BRUCE VILANCH'S op-ed piece that I have to read at a minimum 4 or 5 times before I pass it along to friends. HOPEFULLY HOPEFULLY Bruce is reading this now, and working on a collection to be found in our local GLBT bookstores very soon, to be followed by his national tour!
If you're not subscribing, you're missing out on some of the best GLBT writing there is today!
Respectable Mag for All
Advocate expresses some of the most important issues in the gay and lesbian world in a way that everyone can appreciate. I'm not gay, but I love reading Advocate because it tells me things I wouldn't be find in Time or Newsweek. It's a really refreshing and interesting news magazine. I recommend it for everyone, man, woman, gay, straight, whatever, I think it's worth your time.
