Complex is the wave of the future! It's like a pop culture mag with a hip-hop sensibility -- and a great product guide. I think it's really enjoyable to read and more closely reflects my actual lifestyle than any other mag I've seen.
What I like the most about it is that it doesn't take anything too seriously. It doesn't put Hip-Hop on a pedestal and it covers a much broader range of topics than Vibe, The Source or XXL. It has a great sesne of humor and surprisingly sophisticated tone of voice.
That said, there is a lot of advertising and the occasional piece of garbage in there. But I think it's pretty new -- and I would recommend it to any of my friends.
I think it's pretty cool for the price
The subscription is only 9.97, I think that's worth the large, sometimes annoying, amount of ads stuffed in this magazine. Since I'm always looking for something to buy, ads aren't too much of a problem for me. It's pretty thick and it has some pretty good articles. I also like how they do the flip thing, one side is called the "magazine" and flip it over and it's the "guide" which gives you some info (prices, websites, where you can buy it, etc.) on a couple hundred products. I think it's worth the price; especially if you're a big-spender like myself...go for it.
Pretty good but not great
I have subscriptions to Vibe, The Source, XXL, King and Slam. So I read many hiphop magazines each month but I find that Complex is very unique because it looks at many different subjects in a fresh perspective. It is also very humourous. The only negatives I find are that 1) It only comes out like once every 3 mos. 2) It's filled with ads (but what magazine isn't these days) 3) Some of the stuff in there is just a little too odd for me. So if you like hiphop media but want it presented with a new spin I think Complex is for you.
