Subscriber Reviews
One of the BEST
It was about a year ago when I saw Organic Style and bought a copy. I now subscribe and for a good reason. Unlike so many magazines this has more articles and less ads. And like a recent issue that showed the difference between Conventional and Organic items for the potting shed I like how they give both sides of article on cleaning, garden, etc., products so the reader can see that there are both less expensive as well as healthier choices. And that the choices are available at stores most of us frequent and aren't special send away for, items that are so often over priced as well.
Like Simple Living and Natural Home I appreciate the articles that teach me new things. We have a small Sierra cottage with the hardwood floors and quality woodwork and are trying to install healthier choices in flooring for the baths and kitchen and this magazine provides so much of the wisdom and in doing so keeps me from having to buy four books to glean half the information.
I like the lay out, easy to read and use article and the fact that I don't see young bodies from Madison Avenue but people who are healthy and happy and look like many of my healthy California neighbors and friends. I recommend that people subscribe to the magazine for themselves and their local library.
Interesting Information You'll Actually Use
I think some of these reviewers are missing the point. Organic Style isn't a gardening magazine -- which is why I like it. It's more of a lifestyle guide to living better, feeling better and looking better. I'm not a vegetarian or a rabid organic advocate -- just an ordinary suburban mom looking for ideas for eating healthier, simplifying things around the house and putting together an outfit that doesn't make me look ridiculous. I found this magazine has great ideas that I actually use (unlike other magazines I get where they are filled with ideas suitable only for a movie star lifestyle or people with a personal chef). For example, they recently recomended an organic fruit and cereal bar my kids love -- and it's so much better for them. I can use that a lot more than spying the $2,000 baby booties Elizabeth Hurley bought. So if you're looking for a guide to make small changes that will make your life healthier, this magazine is a good place to start.
A Magazine for the Organic Lifestyle
If you love yoga and find yourself wandering in the organic product section of your local grocery store, then this magazine might interest you. If not for the amusing articles about learning ujjayi breathing; for all the information on food, beauty products and lifestyle choices included for the organically aware.
In the June 2004 issue they featured an interesting website that shows you how toxic your zip code is. I was relieved to find that I had moved to an area with good air quality even though I keep an air purifier running constantly. They say the air inside your home can be more toxic than the air outside.
This magazine makes you more aware of all the resources you really do have to enhance your life and the advertising is at least encouraging instead of annoying. I am now lusting after a Dyson vacuum, thinking about trying out some new Wai Lana Yoga workout videos and dreaming about buying all the natural skin care products featured throughout the magazine.
Dr. Tieraona answers questions in a living well section. Although, I was wondering why she didn't recommend a product like Emer'gen-C "Lite" to the person asking about their afternoon slump.
"Create a Butterfly Garden" will be an article to clip and save for future gardening projects. It may be time to buy some purple coneflowers. You can also read about nontoxic fertilizers and pesticides.
Veronique Vienne has an article in the June 2004 issue about entertaining even if you're shy or broke. She recommends things like cooking with butter and fragrant herbs and lighting honeysuckle candles. Just reading about her adventures made me hungry. There also seem to be pages of decorating tips, sports features and information on lifestyle choices for families. This magazine promotes healthy life choices like balancing family and work or finding healthy food on the go. There "How to Pack a Picnic" gave me some great ideas for a summer picnic. Now if only I could escape into Vincent Van Gogh's painting "Landscape at St. Remy."
If you enjoy using organic ingredients, you will find a few recipes and the Stuffed Summer Squash is a recipe I'll try as soon as I can find some small yellow summer squash. There were tips on how to save money on Organic foods, which yes are slightly more expensive in general. Although, you might notice you spend less money on doctor visits or other areas of your life because healthy choices do make you feel much more healthy over time.
While this magazine is all about Organic, it is not Vegetarian focused. You will still find recipes for Crispy Chicken Drumettes to go along with your String Bean and Fennel Salad. They had a taste test for organic cookies and I have to agree the Country Choice Organic Sandwich Cremes are better than an Oreo cookie.
Overall, I found this magazine to be highly enjoyable to read in the bath or out on the deck. If you have just returned from planting flowers by the light of the moon, you might enjoy reading this magazine while soaking in an Aura Cacia Purify Aromatherapy Mineral Bath scented with the fragrance of flowers and spicy wood.
I've asked my husband for a subscription for my birthday because I thought this was a great way to remind myself to eat healthy and exercise regularly. Organic Style not only makes you more aware of your lifestyle choices, it presents some interesting options. You can now even buy natural wheat litter for your cat
that is safe and non-toxic for kittens. I finally found some at Petsmart and plan to clip the dollar coupon. I'm dreaming of finding a new kitten.
